THE VALUE-CHAIN THEORY OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT: A DEVELOPMENTAL APPROACH FOR NIGERIA

Abstract

The study examined the power of value chain theory for rural development because Nigeria development strategy is often urban based neglecting the immense human and material resources endowment of the rural setting. It then canvassed this approach wherein the products from the rural areas would receive investments for value addition before it goes to the next level of processing. In so doing, the rural areas would receive investments that would change its socio-economic phase.The approach was descriptive and the framework for analsis neo-functionalism. The outcome would translate rural areas to centres where poverty and unemployment would be on the decline. At the end of it, the rural areas would have been integrated into the development strategies of the nation-state.
